CASENITY.com – Adult Swim is bringing an unusually dark culinary adventure to its Toonami lineup this fall with Get Jiro, an upcoming animated series inspired by the graphic novels created by the late chef and travel writer Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose. The series has now received an official premiere date along with a red-band trailer that offers a glimpse of its brutal world.

Get Jiro is scheduled to debut on October 3, 2026, at midnight ET/PT during Adult Swim's Toonami programming block. Viewers will also be able to stream the series on HBO Max beginning the following day.

Rather than presenting a conventional story about professional cooking, the series imagines a dystopian Los Angeles where culinary expertise has become the ultimate source of authority. In this future society, chefs occupy the highest positions of influence, while food functions as both a social marker and a form of currency.

At the center of this strange hierarchy is Jiro, a mysterious sushi chef whose arrival disrupts the established order. Voiced by Brian Tee, Jiro enters Los Angeles carrying his own ambitions and a desire for revenge, putting him on a collision course with powerful figures who control the city's food culture.

The newly released trailer emphasizes just how dangerous this culinary society can become. Restaurant rivalries are portrayed more like conflicts between criminal organizations, with chefs willing to use extreme violence to defend their influence and reputation. The series therefore mixes food culture with action, dark humor and graphic violence.

The concept originates from the graphic novels published through DC's Vertigo imprint. Bourdain and Rose created the original story with artwork by Langdon Foss and Alé Garza. The television adaptation is being developed by Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood, with Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios behind the production.

The voice cast also features Titus Welliver, Alison Pill and Justin Kirk alongside Brian Tee. The production team includes Tanaka and Gatewood as executive producers, joined by Jordan Blum and Sam Register.

Although the premise sounds deliberately outrageous, the series retains an important element associated with Bourdain's work: using food as a gateway to explore broader human issues. According to Adult Swim, the adaptation expands its culinary premise into themes involving culture, obsession, social hierarchy and human behavior.

With its unusual combination of dystopian science fiction, culinary culture and bloody action, Get Jiro is shaping up to be one of Adult Swim's more distinctive animated projects. Its October premiere will give audiences the chance to discover whether Jiro can survive a city where a chef's reputation can be just as dangerous as a weapon.

What Is Anime?

Anime is a form of animated storytelling most commonly associated with Japan, although the term is often used more broadly for animation influenced by Japanese visual and narrative traditions. Anime can cover virtually any genre, from fantasy and action to romance, comedy and science fiction.

Get Jiro is an American adult animated production rather than a traditional Japanese anime, but its broadcast through Adult Swim's Toonami action and anime block places it within a programming space closely associated with anime audiences.
